A Survey on the Pregnant Women with Chloasma Gravidarum in Daejeon Area

Abstract
In order to know the distribution of chloasma gravidarum among Korean women, and to find out the relationship between the frequency of chloasma gravidarum and the social, economical and the cultural factors, this surrey was carried out by questionnaires during the period of truly to September 1974.
The subject of this survey were 640 pregnant woman who lived in Daejeon Aarea. From the results of this study, the following conclusions were obtained:
1. General Characteristics of the Subjects:
1) The age group of 25¡­34 years old which had usually high parity showed the highest frequency of C.G. appearance (46.0%) in the age distribution.
2) The education levels of most of the subjects were under the middle school (72.5%). Out of the above women, 33.5% reported the middle school and 39.0% reported the primary school.
3) The living standards of the pregnant women were middle (56.3%) and low (43.8%).
2. The frequency rate of C.G. showed 61.3% in the total subjects answered. And the rest of them did not complain of any symptom of C.G.
3. The frequency rate of C.G. by ages of the pregnant women showed 38.8% in the age group of 25¡­29 years (the highest frequency rate), 27.8% in the 30¡­34 years old group and 13.3% in the 20¡­24 years old group.
4. In cases of taking the relationship between the C.G. frequency and the growth rate of the new-born babies into consideration, the frequency was highest (34.2%) when the body weights of the new-born babies were 2.5 to 2.9kg.
5. The relationship between the parity and the C.G. frequency were shown as follows:
43.7% of the women had C.G. in their first pregnancy.
Twelve percent did in the 2nd pregnancy and 27.8% did in their 3rd pregnancy.
6. The relationships between the miscarriage and the C.G. frequency were reported as follows: 15.9% of the women who had miscarriages once or twice complained of C.G. and 19.7% of the women with history of miscarriages 3~4 times reported C.G.
7. About fifty percent (48.3%) of the subjects experienced the first appearance of the C.G. in the first stage of pregnancy.
And 29.4% of them had experienced it in the 2nd stage pregnancy.
22.5% of them reported it in the 3rd stage of their pregnancy.
8. The chloasma gravidarum usually appeared in the regions of cheeks (47.0%), full face (19.9%), forehead (14.3%), surrounding area of the mouth and doom the molar region (19.5%).
9. Most of the subjects who complained of chloasma gravidarum had a tendency toward the salty foods (27.8%) and not foods (22.2%).
There were half (50%) of the subjects who were fond of the pungent food in number.
10. The delivery conditions of the pregnant women with chloasma gravidarum appearance were reported as follows:
Normal (17.9%), multiple pregnancy (1.8%), postpartum hemorrhage (5.1%), still birth (3.8%), premature birth (2.8%), asphyxia (1.3%) and others (11.5%).
